Box Turtle

What to feed a turtle?
Box turtle love green leafy vegetables, a variety of fruit and an occasional bug or worm.  Our box turtles always have a shallow bowl of rabbit pellets available, just in case they are hungry after they have eaten their daily ration of fruits and vegetable.  The trick to keeping box turtle healthy is to ensure that they have a basking spot of at least 100 degrees and a place to cool off at around 70 degrees and provide them with a wide variety of food.

There are two types of box turtles found at Cub Creek Science Camp.  These box turtles are; the Three Toed Box Turtle and the Ornate Box Turtle.  While campers are at summer camp, they will have the opportunity to go on several animal safari's.  On these hikes campers will look for native animals including box turtles.

Campers may keep a box turtle that they find, for the time that they are at camp.  To do this, campers must research the proper care and feeding of the turtle and take responsibility for it's care.  They must also agree to return it to the place that they found it, before they leave camp.

Box turtles are housed in the Pentagon, along with our three tortoise species.
