Ringneck Snake
Diadophis punctatus
The Ringneck is a small snake, growing up to
15 inches found across the United States into Mexico and
parts of Canada.
They are generally identified by a distinct
ring around the neck although in some areas this ring is not
very clearly marked and they are not as easily identified.
When handled the Ringneck will give off an
offensive odor to try to ward off predators.
The diet of a Ringneck is primarily small
salamanders, worms and slugs but they will eat lizards,
frogs and other juvenile snakes if available.
Ringnecks at Summer Camp
These snakes are readily found in the summer
here at Cub Creek Science Camp. Because of their small
size and unintimidating presence the campers love to catch
and observe them under the supervision of the staff.
