Pueblan / Honduran Milk Snake
Lampropeltis triangulum campbelli
Pueblan Milk Snakes and the Honduran Milk
Snakes are a non-venomous
type of colubrid snake.
The Pueblan Milk Snakes are commonly found in southern Puebla,
eastern Morelos, and northern Oaxaca, Mexico. These snakes
are also often found as household pets.
The Honduran Milk Snakes are just another sub
species of the same snake only they are found in Ecuador.
The color variations are many so it is very hard to
distinguish between a Pueblan Milk Snake and a Honduran Milk
Snake unless you know the parentage and location they are
from.
They have very bold colorful bands that
distinguish them from other milk snakes. The Coral snake
which is highly venomous has a similar color pattern.
This works to the Pueblan and the Honduran Milk Snakes advantage and is
somewhat a protection against some predators.
They will eat anything that they can
overpower and swallow, either warm blooded or cold blooded
including venomous snakes. They are nocturnal so they come
out to hunt at night.
The Pueblan Milk Snake matures at two years.
During the cooler months from November to March they will go
into a period of brumation, which is the reptile equivalent
to mammal hibernation. When they come out of brumation
and start to feed, they will be ready to mate. The female
will lay 2 - 15 eggs 30 days after mating. It takes 2
months for the babies to hatch. The adults have been known
to guard the eggs but after they hatch the babies are on
their own.
Pueblan/ Honduran Milk Snakes at
Camp
We have a Pueblan Milk Snake
named Piablo and one named Bella. They are friendly and love to eat fuzzy little
mice. Piablo sleeps in a little pueblo shaped house inside
his enclosure. He lives
in the reptile room of the Animal Learning Center here at
Cub Creek Science Camp along with the other Milk Snakes.
We have another Milk Snake that may be Honduran, named
Flames. Many of our campers adopt Flames during the
summer because he is a really laid back snake.
Flames getting a lot of attention
from our campers.
