Leopard Gecko
Leopard geckos are lizards
native to Pakistan, India and Afghanistan where the terrain
is dry and rocky. The geckos live on and under the ground
and are nocturnal. A leopard gecko has a triangular head and
a large tail where it stores fat. Its skin
is bumpy and heavily patterned. The patterns are designed to
camouflage the gecko from predators.
A leopard gecko makes an
excellent pet. They are small, have minimal care
requirements, and can be left alone for several days. They
are quiet, don’t smell, and don’t need attention. Leopard
geckos are inexpensive and easily available from pet stores
and breeders. They do not require a large amount of space.
They have a wide variety of color and pattern variations.

At Cub Creek Science Camp we
have several Leopard Geckos. They are a favorite
lizard at Science Camp among our campers. They are
calm and don't mind being held. One difference between
the Leopard Geckos and our other Geckos is that they are
terrestrial so they have toenails, whereas the Golden Gecko
and the Tokay Gecko have little pads at the ends of
their fingers. Campers learn what to
feed the Leopard Gecko and how to take proper care of them during the
summer Science Camp Adopt an Animal program. Our
Leopard Geckos are kept in the reptile room in the Animal
Learning Center. Several different Geckos are housed
togethe.
