Chinchilla
Chinchillas are a type of
rodent. They are originally form the Andes Mountains
in South America. They grow to be the size of a small
rabbit (about 9 inches form head to bottom)
Chinchillas have beautiful thick, soft coats and were
originally bred for their fur.
Chinchillas make great indoor pets because they are odorless
and their fur is so dense that they can not get pests such
as fleas. Chinchillas also have no dander so people
who are allergic to other pets can usually tolerate
chinchillas without problems. ]
At Cub Creek Science Camp we
usually have a variety of Chinchillas. They can range
from silvery gray, almost white to a very dark gray.
Our Chinchillas are fun for the campers to watch and feed
during our Summer Science Camp. Chinchilla fur is
wonderfully soft to touch. While they are nocturnal
animals, they are still active enough in the day to interact
with the campers.
This is a picture of a newly born chinchilla.
Chinchilla are born with fur and opened eyes.
